The situation
Sara Morris trained as a scientist before she became an Enrolled Agent. She runs her practice that way: gather the evidence, question the assumptions, explain what you found.
But she was marketing herself as a small business bookkeeper. Her clients were getting much more than that: cash flow planning, hiring decisions, the kind of analysis that talks someone out of a bad acquisition. She was doing advisory work and getting shopped on bookkeeping prices.
What we did
Our competitive research found a gap nobody in her market was filling. Bookkeepers are too basic for growing businesses. Fractional CFOs are too expensive. The owners stuck in that messy middle had no one.
The research also surfaced why they stay stuck. We called it the shame-fear loop. Owners feel stupid about not understanding their numbers, so they avoid them, so it gets worse, so they feel more ashamed. Traditional accountants make it worse by acting like you should already know this.
That became the positioning: an operationally embedded financial partner for the messy middle, built around one idea. “Never alone in the numbers.” Sara’s science background became the proof point for why she works differently.
Then we guided the copy for her website and printed materials, so every touchpoint says it the same way.
What changed
Within the first month of repositioning, Sara signed more than 10 new clients. She raised her rates.
The clients reaching out now are looking for a strategic partner, not the cheapest bookkeeper in town. Her brand does the filtering before the first call.
